OUR CATHOLIC FAITH - ALL SAINTS DAY
Next week, on Wednesday 1st November, we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints, a solemnity in the life of the Church and a special day for all of us in the Church. This feast day is also linked tightly with the commemoration of All Souls' Day, and both days point clearly to our belief in the "Communion of Saints."
The most extraordinary thing about the saints is that they were ordinary people. While they were filled with passion and the Spirit inspiring them to work for the good of all, and a remarkable faith, they generally struggled with the same doubts, fears, inadequacies, and distractions that we all face. A visit to Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney, is extraordinary in its exhibition on the life of Saint Mary MacKillop, and demonstrates the reality that Mary herself was often in conflict with Church authorities and was a ‘normal person’. Her obedience and sobriety were questioned; many upstanding people had serious doubts about her cause and actively worked to undermine her schools and the sisters working in them. Mary's faith in God, herself and her personal relationship with Christ gave her the strength and tenacity to do the work she did.
As Catholics, we believe strongly that those who are in heaven, those canonised and those remaining unrecognised, intercede for us. The saints we celebrate, those who we have known and those we have read about, listen to our needs and prayers and take them on our behalf to God.
During the month of November, we also especially pray for those who have died, to remember them, to celebrate their love, and to do all we can through our prayers to ensure that they have reached the fulfilment of heaven. We particularly remember those loved ones who have gone before us and pray for their eternal peace.
May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we have now commenced the final term of the school year, I thought it would be timely to also provide the following information about arriving late to school. This would be a worthwhile conversation with your children, even if they have very strong attendance at school.
Every late day can affect your child’s learning and wellbeing. Every minute counts.

Further information in relation to supporting regular school attendance -
WHY MUST I SEND MY CHILD TO SCHOOL?
Education in NSW is compulsory. This means all children from six years of age and under the minimum school leaving age are legally required to attend school.
WHY IS REGULAR ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL IMPORTANT?
Regular school attendance will help your child to succeed in life. Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child to build and maintain friendships with other children. If your child doesn’t learn the basic skills in the early years of school, they may develop learning problems in later years.
MUST I SEND MY CHILD EVERY DAY? YES.
It is a condition of enrolment that you send your child to school every day. A small number of absences may be justified if your child has to:
- go to a special religious ceremony
- is required to attend a serious and/or urgent family situation (eg funeral);and
- is too sick to go to school or has an infectious illness.
MUST MY CHILD ATTEND ALL ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING SPORT? YES.
Children are expected to attend all regular school activities. Do not keep your child at home for the following:
- birthdays;
- minding other children;
- routine check-ups or care such as hair cuts;
- minor family events;
- sleeping in.
Medical and other health appointments for your child should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.
WHY IS ARRIVING AT SCHOOL ON TIME IMPORTANT?
Arriving at school and class on time:
- ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the day when they are most alert;
- helps your child learn the importance of punctuality and routine; and
- gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore reduces the opportunity for classroom disruption.
At OLHC, we are continuing to refine our processes in relation to the regular monitoring of school attendance. This monitoring includes -
- Stage One - Each Friday, notifications will be sent out to families whose child/ren have been absent from school but an explanation for the absence has not been recorded and/or received by the school. Please note that Compass automatically adjusts these absences to Unjustified after 7 days.
- It is a legal obligation for schools to record absences and be provided with a reason for the absence. Thank you for your support in ensuring that these records are kept up to date.
- Stage Two - Contact will be made with students who have ongoing attendance concerns via a COMPASS letter - Emerging Attendance Concerns. Attendance data will continue to be monitored to ensure a regular pattern of attendance is maintained.
- Stage Three - If attendance concerns continue, a meeting with the parents will be requested to develop a school attendance plan.
Thank you for your ongoing support in managing positive school attendance for students.
Enjoy the week ahead.
Jane Webb
Congratulations to Sarkis who are currently in the lead for House Points for the beginning of Term 4. We will continue to count house points each week and the students are being awarded points for following the school rules both on the playground and in the classroom, for wearing the correct uniform, for borrowing from the library and for completing their homework. The PB4L focus for explicit teaching this week is Playground 1, the teachers have retaught the expectations for this playground space and the following poster has been displayed in classrooms throughout the school.
Uniform Reminder
Thank you for your support in ensuring your child comes to school wearing their uniform with pride and making sure their hair complies with the expectations of the uniform policy.
Each week the teachers will award house points to all students wearing the correct uniform, this considers hair, jewellery and socks/shoes. The day that these points are given out will change each week so that both the school and sport uniform are captured. Any student wearing their uniform incorrectly will be spoken to by their teacher and reminded about what needs to be changed and why (e.g.: wearing the wrong earrings).
The expectation is that this will be fixed before the following week when uniform house points will be awarded again. If your child continues to wear their uniform incorrectly then teachers will contact you as parents so that this can be corrected. Please see the photos below for correct summer school and sports uniforms and the expectations for hair and jewellery. Thank you in advance for supporting your child and the teachers with this.
Hair
- Hair styles must be neat and tidy
- Girls hair below the shoulder must be tied back
- Girls may wear hair accessories that match the school uniform
- Boys’ hair is to be no longer than collar length
- Extremes of haircuts are not permitted (hair must be evenly cut)
- Hair colouring is not permitted
- Hair should be cut so that it does not cover the students’ eyes
Jewellery
- Small silver or gold studs (without a stone)/ sleepers (small only that can twist fully through an ear)
- Piercings to be on girls only (one piercing on the ear lobe only)
- Small watches may be worn but no coloured straps/bands so as to draw attention to them
- No smart watches are permitted
- Religious medals on a thin chain (no leather) can be tucked under shirt
- Rings and bracelets of any description are not permitted
- No makeup of any description is to be worn - this includes nail polish

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY - FRIDAY 27th OCTOBER 2023
Hats off to our teachers this World Teachers’ Day!
What do teachers mean to you?
Students will be able to show their gratitude to their teacher on Friday.
We can learn so much from the leper, who took the time to express gratitude to Jesus. We are encouraged to show this gratitude to others. We should never underestimate the positive impact that showing this gratitude can have in the lives of others. It is so important that we take time to show gratitude towards others.
Thank you to all the teaching and support staff at OLHC, who work tirelessly to support the students' growth in their faith and improve in their learning.
PARENT SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP FRAMEWORK
At the P&F Meeting last week, I drew the attention of those parents present to the Parent Partnership Framework. When parents accepted the offer of an enrolment place at OLHC, they also committed to upholding the principles that can be found in the framework.
These principles are -
- Authentic Catholicity
- Respectful Relationships
- Supportive Environment
- Connected Community
- Active Engagement
These principles have been included below for your information is linked below -
Parent School Partnership Framework
These principles permeate through all aspects of school life and through all interactions -
- Parent to parent
- Staff to parent
- Parent to staff
These principles underpin all that we do - and underpin the way in which we operate for the benefit of our students. Please refer to the CEO website for more information using below link.
Parent Partnership (also in other languages)
Thank you for familiarising yourself with these principles and ensuring they are upheld at OLHC.
“We must take note of the changes that have affected both the family and the school, and renew the commitment to constructive collaboration – for the benefit of children and young people” — Pope FrancisCLASS PLACEMENT 2024
Term 4 is the time when we complete the 2023 school year as well as prepare for 2024. One of the major tasks this term is to prepare classes for 2024. Teachers and staff members utilise their professional expertise in making decisions, seeking to create equitable class groupings considering all students.
Please note - this applies to Year Two and Year Six for 2024 that will be regrouped as we have 2 clasess/streams for each grade.
All other grades (Kinder, Year One, Year Three, Year Four and Year Five will be single class/stream for 2024).
Optimising the learning environment is the prime focus when forming new class groups for 2024, not forming friendship groups. The aim is to provide classes in which each child is able to continue to develop to their full potential.
If there is a particular issue regarding your child’s optimum learning for 2024, please write to Mrs Webb, via email, stating your concerns and requests. You are invited to be proactive rather than reactive.
Please note that this is not an opportunity to request individual teachers, but an opportunity to state a particular issue that might impact on your child’s learning in 2024. All requests will be considered but NOT NECESSARILY GUARANTEED.
Please send your email requests to info@olhcdow.catholic.edu.au , using Class Placement 2023 as the subject line, marked to the attention of Mrs Webb by Friday 24th November 2022. Further requests regarding class placement will not take place after this date.
Final reminder -Year 6 Parents Graduation - Signature Bear and Soccer Ball
Please advise the school office by tomorrow Friday 27 Octopber 2023, whether you would like to take up the opportunity for Year 6 parents to buy Graduation Signature Bear, soccer ball, or a football. This is only optional for parents to purchase and not compulsory.
Don't forget to bring your drink bottles !
The official bushfire season has now started and as the school is located in a bush fire proned area, part of the school's Bush Fire Management plan is we must remind parents that its imperiative that all students bring their water bottles to school each day. Water bottles need to be clearly labelled with child name and class.
Please remind your child/ren each morning before coming to school.
The Bush Fire Management plan will be shared on our website in coming weeks.

School Student transport 2024 applications are now open:
Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2024 can apply here. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting additional travel entitlement because of new shared parental arrangement (e.g. joint custody).
Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of Term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2024 school year. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.
If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send them an expiry notification via email.
Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2024.
Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
