Dear Parents and Carers,
As we are now in the month of October, we are reminded that as part of our Catholic faith tradition, it is the month that is dedicated to the Holy Rosary.
The Rosary is a group of prayers where you reflect on the important events in the life of Jesus and Mary. The word ‘rosary’ means a chain of roses and the roses are prayers. The Rosary contains four sets of mysteries or events from periods in Jesus’ life: the ‘Joyful Mysteries’, the ‘Mysteries of Light’, the ‘Sorrowful Mysteries’ and the ‘Glorious Mysteries’.
As a prayer, it reminds us that we are never alone when we pray; when we pray we are always helped by the prayers of Our Lady and the saints in heaven as well as the prayers of all the members of the Church. Rosary beads are used to help us; they count our prayers and tell us which prayer to say.
During the month of October, we pray the rosary for world peace, those living with illness, the elderly and frail, those who are completing exams and the special intentions of those in our community.
Our Lady of the Rosary
Pray for Us.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 4! It is almost impossible to believe this is our final term for 2023.
The holidays are always a wonderful time to reconnect with family and friends and I hope the last two weeks were also an opportunity to rest and recharge in preparation for the term ahead.
Term 4 will be filled with many life-giving community events. These include our Kindergarten 2024 playgroup sessions, Year Five Student Leadership elections, First Holy Communion workshops and celebration of the sacrament, School Swimming and Surf Program, Christmas celebrations, Semester 2 reports, and our Year 6 farewell.
In Term Four, the lifecycle of the school year recommences as we welcome our newest school members – Kindergarten 2024 and their families and farewell our Year Six students, some of whom have been part of the OLHC school community for the past seven years.
Please keep informed regarding all the great things happening and do try and join us if you are able. We certainly have much to look forward to and be grateful for!
Students not returning to OLHC IN 2024
If parents are already aware that their child/ren will not be returning to Our Lady Help of Christians in 2024, we request that this information be provided to the school office as soon as possible.
This information will assist us with accommodating both new applications and students who are currently on our waiting list. Please send an email to info@olhcdow.catholic.edu.au if your child/ren will not be returning to the OLHC school community in 2024. The office staff will forward you paperwork to complete. Thank you for your completion of this necessary documentation
Class Placement 2024
Term 4 is the time when we complete the 2023 school year as well as prepare for 2024. One of the major tasks this term is to prepare classes for 2024. Teachers and staff members utilise their professional expertise in making decisions, seeking to create equitable class groupings considering all students.
Please note - this applies to Year One and Year Five that will be regrouped for 2024.
All other grades (Kinder, Year One, Year Three, Year Four and Year Six will be single stream for 2024).
Optimising the learning environment is the prime focus when forming new class groups for 2024, not forming friendship groups. The aim is to provide classes in which each child is able to continue to develop to their full potential.
If there is a particular issue regarding your child’s optimum learning for 2024, please write to Mrs Webb, via email, stating your concerns and requests. You are invited to be proactive rather than reactive.
Please note that this is not an opportunity to request individual teachers, but an opportunity to state a particular issue that might impact on your child’s learning in 2024.
All requests will be considered but NOT NECESSARILY GUARANTEED.
Please send your email requests to info@olhcdow.catholic.edu.au , using Class Placement 2024 as the subject line, marked to the attention of Mrs Webb by Friday 24th November 2023. Further requests regarding class placement will not take place after this date.
Please note that because we are committed to the belief that each child begins each school year anew, we do not retain information regarding these requests from previous years.
This is the time to raise any issues regarding your child’s optimum learning for 2024. After all requests have been considered the school will make the final decision regarding all placements.
Dates for Term 4
- Last day of Term 4 for students Friday 15th December. Students will be able to go home following the End of year Mass and the farewell tunnel.
A number of students will be participating in excursions and overnight camps this term, (further information to follow via Compass Events);
- Years Three and Four attending Wollongong Science Centre on Wednesday 25th October
- Year Six attending Wedderburn Christian Campsite on Wednesday 22nd - Friday 24th November
- Kindergarten attending Calmsley Hill Farm on Wednesday 6 December
We know that all these students will be wonderful representatives of our school and remember to follow the school rules on these excursions and campsites. We thank the teachers for the planning and preparation that goes into the organisation of these events. We look forward to sharing photos with you via our Facebook page over the coming weeks.
As we commence this final term we ask God to bless us all and each of our families and ask for God’s continued blessing.
Jane Webb
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope that you have all had a lovely break with your families and found the time away from the busyness of school life. I know the teachers have also enjoyed the time to recuperate after a very busy Term 3 and are all looking forward to enjoying the final term together as a school community.
Congratulations to MacKillop for winning the House Points for Term 3, they were awarded their mufti day at the end of the term. We will begin the process again this term and the students will continue being awarded points for following the school rules both on the playground and in the classroom, for wearing the correct uniform, for borrowing from the library and for completing their homework.
Thank you for your support in ensuring your child has returned to school this term wearing their uniform with pride and making sure their hair complies with the expectations of the uniform policy.
Each week the teachers will award house points to all students wearing the correct uniform, this takes into account hair, jewellery and socks/shoes. The day that these points are given out will change each week so that both the school and sport uniform are captured. Any student wearing their uniform incorrectly will be spoken to by their teacher and reminded about what needs to be changed and why (eg: wearing the wrong earrings). The expectation is that this will be fixed before the following week when uniform house points will be awarded again. If your child continues to wear their uniform incorrectly then teachers will contact you as parents so that this can be corrected. Please see the photos below for correct summer school and sports uniforms and the expectations for hair and jewellery. Thank you in advance for supporting your child and the teachers with this.
Hair
- Hair styles must be neat and tidy
- Girls hair below the shoulder must be tied back
- Girls may wear hair accessories that match the school uniform
- Boys’ hair is to be no longer than collar length
- Extremes of hair cuts are not permitted (hair must be evenly cut)
- Hair colouring is not permitted
- Hair should be cut so that it does not cover the students’ eyes
Jewellery
- Small silver or gold studs (without a stone)/ sleepers (small only that can twist fully through an ear)
- Piercings to be on girls only (one piercing on the ear lobe only)
- Small watches may be worn but no coloured straps/bands so as to draw attention to them
- No smart watches are permitted
- Religious medals on a thin chain (no leather) can be tucked under shirt
- Rings and bracelets of any description are not permitted
- No makeup of any description is to be worn - this includes nail polish

Symbio Excursion
Last week of Term 3, Year 1 enjoyed the Symbio Wildlife Park Excursion. It was a warm and sunny day, but the students had a great time at the zoo.
Please enjoy some photos of the day.

YEAR FIVE VISIT TO NATIONAL CAPITAL - Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd September
Last term, the Year Five students travelled to the National Capital - Canberra for an overnight camp. They were wonderful representatives of OLHC and gained so much from the experience. Thank you to those parents who expressed their gratitude to the staff Mrs Western, Mr Myerscough and myself for accompanying the students. This overnight excursion provided wonderful opportunities for the students to deepen their knowledge in relation to democracy, the preferential voting system and houses of parliament. We express our gratitude to Mr Myerscough, for his thorough planning and preparation and Mrs Western for the support provided in attending the camp. Please see below for some photos of the students' Canberra experience. We also extend our gratitude to the office staff, who assisted in preparing for the camp.
PARLIAMENT AND CIVICS EDUCATION REBATE (PACER)
Year 5 students recently set off for an educational tour of Canberra, our national capital last term. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
For many years the Australian Government has recognised the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as a part of their Civics and Citizenship education and has contributed towards costs through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program.
To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Program Unit outline
This unit of work will teach students about the development of the Australian system of government. This will prepare students for the Canberra Excursion on the 21st-22nd of September in Term 3. Students will be engaged in learning about the influences on the Australian Government System and the levels of Government: Local, State and Federal. They will also undertake a range of learning experiences including role play and investigations about the House of Representatives and the Senate.
We are extremely grateful for this support and look forward to sharing student reflections in the weeks ahead.

CONGRATULATIONS TO COHEN LACEY (Year 3M) - MACKILLOP CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last term, Cohen represented the Wollongong Diocese as part of the Mackillop Team.
Cohen competed in the 100m event and came 12 out of 16 runners!

KINDERGARTEN 2024 PLAYGROUP - WELCOME TO OLHC!
It has been wonderful to welcome the newest members of the OLHC school community - our Kinder 2024 student, who are having such a great introduction to school life at the playgroup sessions. These sessions are helpful in assisting the Kinder 2024 students to get to know some of their peers that they will be commencing “big” school with next year.
It has also been a great chance for parents to meet and get to know each other in an informal way prior to their child commencing school. Welcome to OLHC Kinder 2024 - we look forward to a positive journey together!
Playgroup will be held on Friday 13th October, Wednesday 18th October and Friday 20th October. We look forward to welcoming you then.

CHRISTMAS STORY ART OPENING AND EXHIBITION - WOLLONGONG ART GALLERY
It is with great excitement that Monique Brticevich - Year 6M has had her Christmas Story Artwork selected to be part of the exhibition at Wollongong Art Gallery.
Monique attended the Opening Night of the exhibition last night. At the event, it was announced that Monique’s artwork has been selected as a Finalist by a panel of judges.
This means that the artwork now goes to Notre Dame University in Sydney and is displayed with other works of art from other Dioceses.
What an amazing achievement for Monique! Congratulations - we are so proud of you!
STAFF NEWS
After much discernment and prayers Mrs Winifred Cameron has made the decision to relinquish her permanent classroom teaching position and leadership role at OLHC from 2023. Mrs Cameron has been at OLHC for many years and is a very much valued member of our school community. I personally have been very grateful for Mrs Cameron’s tireless work and support in my role as Principal.
Mrs Cameron will be remaining on staff in a part time capacity next year and will continue to support students with Diverse Learning Needs.
Further staffing announcements will be made as the term progresses.
