Dear Parents and Carers,
Earlier this week we celebrated The feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which was defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. He declared that after her death, Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul.
It was a response to the horrible human carnage of two world wars and the horrors of concentration camps. The church wanted to reaffirm the dignity of the human body and rekindle faith in the resurrection of the body. This feast, affirms that our human bodies are not mere shells but created in God’s image and likeness.
The Church wanted to say something not only about the body of Mary, but about the body of each of us. The feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary shows God’s love for all of us and of God’s reverence for the body of those created in the divine image. In Mary, human nature is glorified and God desires it to be glorified in every person. It is for this reason that Jesus became human flesh and dwelt among us in our world.
The celebration of Mary's Assumption celebrates the bodily presence and dignity of every person in our school community. Even in our differences, our challenge is to be aware that every one of us is made in the image and likeness of God. Our care and respect for the bodily presence of each other, in turn, glorifies God.
This is why, as a school community, we place a great emphasis on the respectful relationships that the students have with each other and the adults who work with them. The Love of Learning value of empathy helps the children, and adults, understand how we can interact with one another. This is reinforced by the social norms of the playground and classrooms.
The Assumption of Mary helps us to remember the importance of recognising the dignity of each individual and perhaps Pope Pius XII knew that society would need this reminder each year.
The feast of Mary’s Assumption is a preview of what our lives will be. At the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed, or taken up, into heaven body and soul. She did not have to wait for the end of the world, as we do. God granted her this special privilege because of her sinlessness and her fullness of grace.
Let us continue to celebrate this important feast and recognise that by thinking about Mary’s Assumption, people all over the world would develop a deeper respect for their own lives and their own bodies. He also hoped that people would grow in respect for the lives of others. As Mary was assumed into heaven, a place in heaven awaits each of us. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of salvation.
Let us continue to Seek Wisdom and Love God, just as Mary did.

GO THE MATILDA'S!
It certainly has been a very exciting time to witness the recent success of the Matildas, the Australian Women’s Soccer Team, competing at the World Cup. As I reflected on the success of the team, it made me consider the how when we work closely together, for a common purpose, great things can be achieved.
VISIT BY Mr Josh Cotter - Deputy Mayor Campbelltown
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr Josh Cotter to OLHC as he met with our Year Six Captains and Vice-Captains. Mr Cotter is the Deputy Mayor of Campbelltown and holds an important leadership position in our local community. Mr Cotter shared with the student leaders the importance of never giving up and how he has learnt to cope with set backs. He also spoke of the importance of his family and how his parents made many sacrifices to support him and his siblings with opportunities such as an education.
It was very special to welcome Mr Cotter to OLHC as he is a former student of the school. He was able to share some special memories of his time at OLHC and how those experiences have helped to shape him today.
FAREWELL MRS.MURPHY
As mentioned previously, next week, Mrs Murphy will retire from her role as School Support Officer (SSO) at OLHC. Over nearly 25 years, Mrs Murphy has supported in the library, office and also in the classrooms. Mrs Murphy has said that the heart has always been working with the students. We wish Mrs Murphy every blessing as she begins this exciting new chapter.
We will have the opportunity to thank Mrs Murphy as a school later this year, where we will have a special Mass celebrated by Fr Sarkis. Parents will be most welcome to join us to thank Mrs Murphy for the significant contribution that she has made to OLHC.
STAFFING NEWS
As you may be hearing from your children from time to time, staffing has continued to be a challenge for us. The staff at OLHC have been very flexible and accommodating as we try to make decisions in the best interests of our students, so as not to impact their learning. There are times, however, when sickness takes over and we have had to do the best we can. I deeply appreciate your ongoing understanding and trust. We try to avoid splitting classes, however, this is sometimes unavoidable.

LATE TO SCHOOL
Thank you to all families in our school who have made a conscious effort of being on time for school each day. The number of children who arrive late for school has dramatically reduced. Let's keep up these good efforts. School starts officially at 8.25am. Class rolls are taken as soon as classes enter their rooms to commence learning for the day.
Thank you to those students and families who are regularly on time for school, ready to learn from the beginning of the school day.
If your child is late for school, please accompany them to the school office and provide the office staff with a reason as to why they are late.
