Gospel Reflection - The Sower and the seed
“Hear this! A sower went out to sow.” Mark 4:3
This line begins the familiar Parable of the Sower. We are aware of the details of this parable in that the sower sows seed on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns and ultimately on good soil. The story reveals that we must strive to be like that “good soil” in that we must receive the Word of God into our souls, allowing it to be nurtured so that it may grow in abundance.
But this parable reveals something more that could easily be missed. It reveals the simple fact that the sower, in order to plant at least some seed in good and fertile soil, must act. He must act by going forth spreading seed in abundance. As he does this, he must not become disheartened if the majority of the seed he has sown fails to reach that good soil. The path, the rocky ground, and the thorny ground all are places where seed is sown but ultimately dies. Only one of the four places identified in this parable produces growth.
Jesus is the Divine Sower and His Word is the Seed. Therefore, we should realise that we are also called to act in His person by sowing the seed of His Word in our own lives. Just as He is willing to sow with the realisation that not every seed will produce fruit, so also we must be ready and willing to accept this same fact.
One lesson we must take from this parable is that the spreading of the Gospel requires effort and commitment on our part. We must be willing to toil and labour for the Gospel despite whether or not people are willing to receive it. And we must not allow ourselves to become discouraged if the results are not what we had hoped for.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Semester 2!
It has been wonderful to return to school and to see the students so well rested and ready for a new term of learning.
On behalf of the staff, I offer my thanks to all parents who were able to attend the Parent / Teacher Interviews held at the end of Term 2. These meetings were an important opportunity to set learning goals for the second semester of the year. Goals are a wonderful means of focusing effort and improving motivation.
Several studies have shown improved academic performance when parents are part of this goal setting process with their children. These goals don’t need to be competitive, like being the best at something, or topping the class in a subject. Nor do they need to all be directly related to academic goals; some more personal learning goals are just as relevant. Educational goals should be achievable, but they should also be aspirational. For instance, parents could ask their children what they’d like to do differently this term compared to the first part of the year. Parents may need to ask their children some leading questions and explain that goals at school don’t need to be world changing.
It always helps to write goals down so they can be referred to throughout the term. Setting goals alone are not sufficient, a strategy or plan on how to go about trying to achieve them is also required. This often requires adjustments to be made by the child, but also by members of the family. What is important is that children are empowered by their parents to come up with their own goals. Children will be more motivated to achieve their goals if they’ve set them themselves because these goals will be important to them.
An important part of this whole goal-setting exercise is celebrating your child’s success when a goal is attained. Parents generally know what best motivates each of their own children and often rewards or enticements are not as effective in helping children achieve goals as personal attention and words of affirmation from their parents.
Thank you for the ongoing support that you provide in supporting your child strive to meet these learning goals
May we continue to Seek Wisdom and Love God over the coming term.,
Jane Webb
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that you all found the holiday break relaxing and rewarding time spent together as a family. The students have all come back to school refreshed and ready to learn, as have the teachers.
Last term the Year 3 and 5 students participated in the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy). Over the coming weeks the parents will receive the results of this assessment. This year these results will look a little different from previous years. The NSW Education Standards Authority states that: from 2023, proficiency standards will replace the previous reporting of student NAPLAN results that used numerical bands and the national minimum standard. Proficiency standards describe what students are expected to know and should be able to do in literacy and numeracy at the time of NAPLAN. Students’ results are measured against 4 levels of proficiency:
- Exceeding: The student’s result exceeded expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: The student’s result met challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: The student’s result indicated that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: The student’s result indicated that they did not achieve the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
PB4L
Congratulations to Ingham who were the winning house for Term 2.
Next Monday at Flag Raising the first house point update for Term 3 will be announced.
Each week there is a different PB4L focus that will be explicitly taught to the students as a reminder of the expectations, procedures and how to follow the school rules in this setting.
This week the focus has been Playground 2 and next week the focus will be the expectations for when we visit the Church, whether that be for Mass, Reconciliation or Benediction. These expectations will also be displayed in the classroom on a poster which highlights how the students can show that they are Being Safe, Respectful and An Active Learner in the Church.
This term we will also add a new layer to this and teach students how to build positive relationships with their peers during this time. Please see the poster for Church below that will be handed out at Flag Raising, explicitly taught to the students and hung in each classroom next week.

Staff News
We warmly welcome our new CatholicCare counsellor, Emma Rijono to OLHC. Emma will be at OLHC each Monday and every second Tuesday. Those students who were seeing our previous school counsellor, Laura, will begin to see Emma over the coming weeks. Emma will also make contact with these students parents. Welcome to our school community Emma!
We keep Miss Megan O’Sullivan in our thoughts and prayers as she prepares to travel to World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon next week. Megan will be joining with other pilgrims and will be representing the Diocese of Wollongong at World Youth Day. We wish Megan a safe journey and a time that nurtures her spiritual growth.
Miss Ainsley Northey has been unable to return this term due to sustaining a fractured wrist from a recent fall. We keep Miss Northey in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery and look forward to her being back with us soon.

School Uniform Policy
The wearing of the correct school uniform is very important at Our Lady Help of Christians School as it creates a greater sense of equality among the student population. The following are some basic guidelines for following the expectations associated with wearing the correct school uniform:
- All students are to wear the full, correct uniform at all times.
- Uniforms are to be labelled, cleaned, pressed, properly repaired and worn neatly at all times.
- Damaged, torn or shabby items of uniform need to be replaced.
- School uniform regulations apply equally to hair, jewellery, make-up (including false fingernails), hats and shoes.
- Classroom teachers are responsible for checking uniform on a daily basis.
- Where a uniform breach occurs a verbal reminder/warning is given.
- If a repetition of uniform breaches occurs, parents will be contacted.
- Students out of uniform, who have a valid reason, should have a note to this effect, signed by their parents.
- Where genuine financial difficulties hamper a student in fully meeting all uniform requirements, the Principal may provide items of uniform at the school’s expense.
- The school clothing pool is open on Wednesday morning with a range of uniform items are available.
