Dear Parents and Carers,
Yesterday we began the liturgical season of Lent and our students had the opportunity to gather in the Church to celebrate Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is a special day for us, the people of God, it signifies the beginning of the Church’s season which we call Lent. During the next forty days we will be journeying together, preparing our hearts and our lives for the new hope that we are promised at Easter. Lent is a time of prayer. Lent is a time for reflecting on the way we live our lives. Lent is a time for examining our hearts and being willing to make changes by being better people. Lent is a time to practise compassion - to look for ways we can lessen the suffering of others. It is a time for saying ‘sorry’ and seeking forgiveness. And it is a time for turning back to our God who gives us the great gift of His love and sharing this love with others through generosity and acts of service.
On Tuesday, I had the privilege of attending the Caritas Launch of Project Compassion for the 2023 Lenten season at St Columbkille’s Corrimal with our School Leaders Monique and Isaac. The theme of the 2023 campaign is ‘For all future generations.’ During the launch stories were shared of how Caritas supports the work of individuals and groups who are striving to make lasting change within their communities around the world. We look forward to responding to those in need in our wider community during this Lenten season, through giving to Project Compassion.
We are called to reflect on the season of Lent and consider the changes that we can make to our everyday lives. We are challenged to consider whether this Lenten season would be a millstone (a heavy and inescapable responsibility) or a milestone (a time of personal spiritual growth and renewal). We are encouraged to consider “Lent for us can be either a millstone around our necks or a milestone to remember”. “It can be something that we feel is weighing us down. Perhaps the idea of fasting or prayer sounds too hard: too much, I’m too busy. But if we turn our attention to God, even just a little more, this Lent can become a milestone on our pilgrimage to eternal life with God who loves us more than we could ever imagine”.
We are encouraged to prepare for the Resurrection of Jesus and share in the joy of Easter through our Lenten preparation. Through our focus on prayer, almsgiving and fasting we are able to let go of those things in our lives that may be weighing us down and turn our focus to God.
May this Lenten season be a time of spiritual growth and renewal for each of us, so that we may grow in our awareness of the needs of others and in closer union with our God who is with us throughout all the seasons of our lives.
Wishing each of you the companionship of Christ in the Lenten journey ahead.

NAPLAN
Our Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy) this term. This assessment is completed by all students across Australia in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. This year NAPLAN testing will be online and as a system and as a school we have prepared for this. The teachers have begun preparing the students for this and the students will have an opportunity to have a go at some sample NAPLAN questions using the platform over the next few weeks. To be ready for this, students must download the NAP app and make sure they come to school each day with their iPad fully charged and have their headphones at school. Further information about NAPLAN Online and the National Assessment Program can be found at
www.nap.edu.au/naplan and https://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/naplan-information-brochure-for-parents-and-carers.pdf
The dates assigned for the NAPLAN assessment this year are from 15 March - 27 March 2023.
The timetable for these assessments at OLHC is outlined below:
Wednesday 15 March - NAPLAN Writing
Thursday 16 March - NAPLAN Reading
Tuesday 21 March - NAPLAN Language Conventions
Thursday 23 March - NAPLAN Numeracy
If your child is unwell and unable to attend school on one of these days, there will be opportunities to catch up on the days in between. The last day for this is Monday 27 May.
PB4L
Throughout the term all students have been trying hard to receive House Points. There are a number of ways that they can do this; by wearing their uniform correctly, completing their homework each week and when they borrow from the library. Students are able to receive extra house points in the classroom and on the playground for following the school rules - BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL and BE AN ACTIVE LEARNER. New Playground tickets have been introduced this year and are handed to students on the playground who are following these rules. Points were also accumulated at the Swimming Carnival and will be added after the Cross Country and Sports Carnival. The Year 6 House Captains count the House Points each week and each Monday the House Points are announced at Flag Raising. On Monday Week 6, the winning House colour for half way through the term will be announced. This house will then be awarded with an ice block at the end of Week 6.
The House Points currently sit at:
1st - Ingham (373 points)
2nd - MacKillop (350 points)
3rd - Rose (341 points)
4th - Sarkis (298 points)
