Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we celebrated The feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which was defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. He declared that after her death, Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul.
It was a response to the horrible human carnage of two world wars and the horrors of concentration camps. The church wanted to reaffirm the dignity of the human body and rekindle faith in the resurrection of the body. This feast, affirms that our human bodies are not mere shells but created in God’s image and likeness.
The Church wanted to say something not only about the body of Mary, but about the body of each of us. The feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary shows God’s love for all of us and of God’s reverence for the body of those created in the divine image. In Mary, human nature is glorified and God desires it to be glorified in every person. It is for this reason that Jesus became human flesh and dwelt among us in our world.
The celebration of Mary's Assumption celebrates the bodily presence and dignity of every person in our school community. Even in our differences, our challenge is to be aware that every one of us is made in the image and likeness of God. Our care and respect for the bodily presence of each other in turn glorifies God.
This is why, as a school community, we place a great emphasis on the respectful relationships that the students have with each other and the adults who work with them. The Love of Learning value of empathy helps the children, and adults, understand how we can interact with one another. This is reinforced by the social norms of the playground and classrooms.
The Assumption of Mary helps us to remember the importance of recognising the dignity of each individual and perhaps Pope Pius XII knew that society would need this reminder each year.
The feast of Mary’s Assumption is a preview of what our lives will be. At the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed, or taken up, into heaven body and soul. She did not have to wait for the end of the world, as we do. God granted her this special privilege because of her sinlessness and her fullness of grace.
The Church has always believed in Mary’s assumption into heaven. But on November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII focused the attention of the whole world on the Assumption of Mary as a mystery of our faith.
Let us continue to celebrate this important feast and recognise that by thinking about Mary’s Assumption, people all over the world would develop a deeper respect for their own lives and their own bodies. He also hoped that people would grow in respect for the lives of others. As Mary was assumed into heaven, a place in heaven awaits us. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of salvation.
Let us continue to Seek Wisdom and Love God, just as Mary did.
Here we are halfway through the term which is hard to believe. The students have been working hard to earn house points and the winning house for the ice block reward will be announced at flag raising next week.
The last couple of weeks the students have been able to access Playground 3, weather permitting, during Break 1 and Break 2 for the first time this year. The students have been excited to be moved to this playground as it gives them a huge grass area to run around and have fun with their friends. Each class has a class ball that is able to be taken out and played with at break time as well. The teachers have explicitly taught the students how to be safe, respectful and active learners during break time on Playground 3. The students who wish to play on this playground at break time line up beside 3M’s classroom and wait for the teachers on duty to supervise them moving onto the playground safely. They can run, sit on the benches under the trees and talk to their friends and move between this playground and playground 1 to go to the toilets. The teachers on duty are always looking out for students following the school rules to give raffle tickets to, these students may have their name called out at flag raising and win the canteen voucher reward. Good luck to all of the students with the announcement of the winning house next week.

YEAR SIX MASS WITH BISHOP BRIAN MASCORD - Gathered As One
Today our Year 6 celebrated their final year of primary school with Bishop Brian at Our Lady Help of Christian Church, Rosemeadow. This gathering was to celebrate the Eucharist with other Year 6 students from across the Macarthur region.
The students had the chance to have lunch together and mix with students from other schools. They also thoroughly enjoyed the Catholic Youth Ministry Wollongong (CYMW) team’s outdoor lunchtime concert together.
This is an important gathering as we come together in communion with one another. The Year 6 students joined together in a beautiful liturgical movement as part of the Mass.
STAFFING NEWS
As you may be hearing from your children from time to time, staffing has continued to be a challenge for us. We have been able to minimise splitting classes due to the cancellation of professional development opportunities for staff. The staff at OLHC have been very flexible and accommodating as we try to make decisions in the best interests of our students, so as not to impact their learning. There are times, however, when sickness takes over and we have had to do the best we can. I deeply appreciate your ongoing understanding and trust. We try to avoid splitting classes, however, this is sometimes unavoidable.
PRINCIPAL APPRAISAL
Thank you to the 70 parents who were able to complete the survey that was shared prior to my Principal Appraisal last week. I am very grateful for the time that was taken and the feedback that was provided by parents, staff and students.
The fundamental purpose of this process is to identify the Principal’s leadership strengths as well as areas for future development and growth. Thank you to those members of the school leadership team, staff, students and parents who were able to provide valuable and affirming feedback either via the survey or in person on the day of the appraisal last week. I look forward to receiving the final report in the coming weeks, this also identified areas for future growth. Thank you for this valuable feedback.

We are seeking feedback about the school managed iPad system in Year 3. If you have feedback could you please contact Miss O’Sullivan via our school email info@olhcdow.catholic.edu.au
