Stewardship thought....

Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart’s desire- a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver?

Gospel Reflection -

The story of Jesus in the home of Martha and Mary complements the story of the Good Samaritan, which immediately precedes it in Luke's Gospel. Both stories are unique to Luke.

Both stories exemplify how a disciple is to fulfill the dual command which begins chapter 10—love of God (Mary) and love of neighbour (the Samaritan). These are the two essentials of life in the kingdom. By using the examples of a Samaritan and a woman, however, Jesus is saying something more. Social codes and boundaries were strict in Jesus' time. Yet to love God with all one's heart and one's neighbour requires breaking those rules. The Kingdom of God is a society without distinctions and boundaries between its members. It is a society that requires times for seeing and doing and also times for listening and learning at the feet of a teacher.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Semester 2!

It has been wonderful to return to school and to see the students so well rested and ready for a new term of learning.

On behalf of the staff, I offer my thanks to all parents who were able to attend the Parent / Teacher Interviews held at the end of Term 2. These meetings were an important opportunity to set learning goals for the second semester of the year. Goals are a wonderful means of focusing effort and improving motivation.

setting_goals.jpg

Several studies have shown improved academic performance when parents are part of this goal setting process with their children. These goals don’t need to be competitive, like being the best at something, or topping the class in a subject. Nor do they need to all be directly related to academic goals; some more personal learning goals are just as relevant. Educational goals should be achievable, but they should also be aspirational. For instance, parents could ask their children what they’d like to do differently this term compared to the first part of the year. Parents may need to ask their children some leading questions and explain that goals at school don’t need to be world changing.

They could be as simple as improving handwriting, listening more closely in class, aiming to get their homework done before dinner, getting dressed into their uniform as soon as they wake up, or even getting to school before the first bell each day.

It always helps to write goals down so they can be referred to throughout the term. Setting goals alone are not sufficient, a strategy or plan on how to go about trying to achieve them is also required. This often requires adjustments to be made by the child, but also by members of the family. What is important is that children are empowered by their parents to come up with their own goals. Children will be more motivated to achieve their goals if they’ve set them themselves because these goals will be important to them.

An important part of this whole goal-setting exercise is celebrating your child’s success when a goal is attained. Parents generally know what best motivates each of their own children and often rewards or enticements are not as effective in helping children achieve goals as personal attention and words of affirmation from their parents.

Thank you for the ongoing support that you provide in supporting your child strive to meet these learning goals

May we continue to Seek Wisdom and Love God over the coming term,

appraisal.jpg

On Tuesday 9 August 2022, I will be undertaking an appraisal of my role as Principal of Our Lady Help of Christians. The Principal Appraisal process is an important platform for reflection on performance and achievement in the role allowing for successes to be acknowledged and affirmed and areas for development to be identified and used for ongoing Performance and Development processes.

This process is designed for identifying areas of future growth and development for me as Principal. I invite you to complete the survey that has been distributed to all parents via email and appreciate your contribution to this important process.

Additionally, there will be an opportunity for a number of parents to be involved in interviews with a member of the panel on the day of the appraisal via telephone.

If you would like to be included in this parent group please let me know. Thank you in advance for your contributions to this important personal and professional growth opportunity.

MOSAIC - Calling for parent helpers

If you have some spare time and would be interested in supporting our school with the completion of the mosaic that is located near the playground area please contact the school office so that we can invite interested parents into the school to complete this project.

Some previous experience in tiling, mosaic work and grouting would be beneficial to support with the completion of this project.

Welcome back to Term 3, I hope you all had a chance to relax and enjoy some quality family time in the holidays. As we begin Semester 2, all classes are doing their beginning of the term assessments to track student progress and to address class and student needs during teaching and learning experiences this term. It is important that all students in Years 3 - 6 come prepared for school each day with their iPad fully charged.

Next Tuesday, 26th July, the students in Years 3 and 5 will be undertaking an ACARA (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) Trial for the 2023 NAPLAN. The purpose of this trial is to evaluate NAPLAN test items (questions) that are under consideration for inclusion in future tests. Schools have been chosen throughout Australia, our school being one of them, to participate in this trial. The students at our school will complete a Language Conventions and a Numeracy Assessment. These students are asked to ensure they have their fully charged iPad and their headphones at school on this day. We will not receive any school or individual student data from this assessment.

This Friday, 22nd July, the Year 6 students will be participating in a Leadership Incursion day run by Explore Discover Act. It is designed to support their leadership journey through providing an engaging, inspiring and meaningful experience. This program is based on the belief that each individual has potential. The activities are experimental, hands on with reflection, allowing the students to gain a greater connection to self, others and the world around them. Incorporated into the experiences are opportunities for the students to engage in planning for meaningful action beyond the program. Due to COVID, this day was postponed at the end of last year so it is wonderful that our Year 6 students are able to still partake in this opportunity. The Year 5 students will participate in this same incursion next term.
