Stewardship Thought ....
From the Gospel ....
Jesus appears to his disciples again and shares a meal with them.
Family life is strengthened through storytelling and shared meal times. In a similar way, Christian life is sustained by God’s word in Scripture and by Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. We are especially sustained in our faith through our weekly celebration of Mass. The Gospel reading reminds us that the Scripture and the Eucharist are given to us so that our acts of bearing witness to Christ might be strengthened.
As you gather as a family, ask each person to share their favourite story about your family. Talk about the importance of these memories about your family life and the importance of the meals you have shared together as a family. Recall that these stories and meals strengthen the love you share. In a similar way, our Christian life is strengthened by sharing God’s Word and the Eucharist at Mass.
The Eucharist also sends us to be Christ’s witnesses in the world today.
Welcome to the second term of the school year. It was wonderful to warmly welcome the students back to school. Thank you for the wonderful way in which you support the school by the way that you prepare and send your child/ren to school each day.
I hope that you were able to take some time over the recent Easter holiday break to spend with your families and loved ones. The Church is still in the season of Easter up until Pentecost Sunday (23rd May). This is an acknowledgement of the time that Christ spent with his followers following the Resurrection. These 'extra' weeks of Easter also help us to hold on to the joy of the season. I pray that the spirit of the risen Lord stays with you in your daily actions and as you interact with others.
For children to be successful at school, it is important for school and home to work closely together to support the child. As parents, you play a key role in supporting your child’s learning and education. At OLHC, we are committed to involving parents as much as possible in your child’s learning. This term, all parents will be invited to attend parent/teacher meetings where you will receive feedback on your child’s learning progress as well as areas for future growth. These interviews will occur at the end of the school term.
Yesterday we welcomed Mr Peter Hill, the Diocese of Wollongong, Director of Schools to OLHC. Mr Hill was able to spend time in classrooms and engaged with students and staff. He also met with the Year 6 School and Vice Captains - picture below.
It was wonderful to welcome Mr Hill to the OLHC school community and discuss with him the initiatives that we have in place to support the continued learning growth of our students.
On Sunday 25th April we pause to give thanks to those men and women who have served our country. We acknowledge our veterans, many of who paid the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to enjoy the freedoms we have today. Next Monday morning, at Flag Raising, we will commemorate ANZAC Day and pause to give thanks for those service men and women who have bravely defended our country. Parents are most welcome to join us if you are able.
Enjoy the coming week,
NAPLAN
As previously advised, the Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy) next term. This assessment is completed by all students across Australia in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. This year, similar to 2019, NAPLAN testing will be online and as a system and as a school we have prepared for this. The teachers have been preparing the students for this throughout the term and the students participated in the practice online NAPLAN test today. To be ready for this, students must download the NAP app and make sure they come to school each day with their iPad fully charged and have their headphones at school.
Further information about NAPLAN Online and the National Assessment Program can be found at www.nap.edu.au/naplan . The dates assigned for the NAPLAN assessment this year are from Tuesday 11 May 2021 - Friday 21 May 2021, further details will be provided next term as to which specific dates we will sit each assessment at our school.

When students exhibit positive behaviour, by following our school rules, their name is written on a raffle ticket and is entered into a draw where two winners are selected at flag-raising on a Monday morning. The students receive a voucher for the Canteen which can be used for treats or put towards a lunch order. Congratulations to these winners:
Annabelle Chakar (1M - Ingham), Sienna Dowds (1M - Sarkis),
Josie Klarich (1M - Ingham), Adrianna van Kints (6M - Sarkis).

Use of School Bubbler
Parents are advised that the school bubblers can be used by students. However, it is recommended that students continue to bring a water bottle from home.
We also have a refilling station that the students can access during the school day to refill their drink bottles.
Please ensure that drink bottles are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Student Absence
Letters to request reasons for a child's absence will be sent home on a weekly basis. Please provide an explanation for the absence and sign off the letter and return it to the office as soon as possible. If you think the absence is incorrect, please note this on the letter.
Parents may also open the Compass app and provide an explanation through there.
Just after 10.00am, on a school day, an alert will automatically be sent to you to advise if your child has been marked absent. You can provide an absence reason via this alert as well. Thank you.
Celebrations and Sharing of Food
This term we are continuing with the request that parents/care-givers not send in birthday cakes or food to share with the class. I understand that this is something that the children enjoy, however, we need to maintain controlled safety and hygiene procedures in the school. If you would like to send in something to acknowledge and celebrate your child’s birthday, you are able to send in packaged goods only (eg, packets of Maltesers, small wrapped chocolate bars etc such as a Freddo Frogs). We will notify you when these restrictions are lifted.
Compass App
This app should be downloaded so you can be kept up to date with the latest events and information from the school. This app is also used for distribution of the Newsletter. Please download the app from your relevant store. For more information please see the attached flyer "Accessing the Compass App".
