Term 4, Week 1 - Thursday 17 October 2024

As we are now in the month of October, we are reminded that as part of our Catholic faith tradition, it is the month  that is dedicated to the Holy Rosary.

Rosary_beads.png

The Rosary is a group of prayers where you reflect on the important events in the life of Jesus and Mary.  The word ‘rosary’ means a chain of roses and the roses are prayers.

The Rosary contains four sets of mysteries or events from periods in Jesus’ life:

  • The Joyful Mysteries help us to think about happy times in Mary’s life.
  • The Sorrowful Mysteries help us to think about the difficult time in Jesus’s life, which made Mary sad.
  • The Luminous Mysteries or Mysteries of Light help us to think about the things Jesus did to help understand how much God loves them.
  • The Glorious Mysteries help us to think about the wonderful times in Jesus’ life and in Mary’s life after the Crucifixion.

As a prayer, it reminds us that we are never alone when we pray; when we pray we are always helped by the prayers of Our Lady and the saints in heaven as well as the prayers of all the members of the Church.   Rosary beads are used to help us; they count our prayers and tell us which prayer to say. During the month of October, we pray the rosary for world peace, those living with illness, the elderly and frail, those who are completing exams and the special intentions of those in our community.

Our Lady of the Rosary

Pray for Us.

      Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term 4! It is almost impossible to believe this is our final term for 2024.

The holidays are always a wonderful time to reconnect with family and friends and I hope the last two weeks were also an opportunity to rest and recharge in preparation for the term ahead.

Term 4 will be filled with many life-giving community events. These include our Kindergarten 2025 playgroup sessions, Year Five Student Leadership elections, First Holy Communion workshops and celebration of the sacrament in November, Grandparents and Great People day, School Swimming and Surf Programs, Christmas celebrations, Semester Two reports, and our Year 6 farewell.

In Term Four, the lifecycle of the school year recommences as we welcome our newest school members – Kindergarten 2025 and their families and farewell our Year Six students, some of whom have been part of the OLHC school community for the past seven years.

Please keep informed regarding all the great things happening and do try and join us if you are able. We certainly have much to look forward to and be grateful for!

STUDENTS NOT RETURNING TO OLHC IN 2025

If parents are already aware that their child/ren will not be returning to Our Lady Help of Christians in 2025, we request that this information be provided to the school office as soon as possible.

This information will assist us with accommodating both new applications and students who are currently on our waiting list. Please send an email to info@olhcdow.catholic.edu.au if your child/ren will not be returning to the OLHC school community in 2025. The office staff will forward you the paperwork to complete. Thank you for your completion of this necessary documentation

      Class Placement  2025

Term 4 is the time when we complete the 2024 school year as well as prepare for 2025.  One of the major tasks this term is to prepare classes for 2025.  Teachers and staff members utilise their professional expertise in making decisions, seeking to create equitable class groupings considering all students.

Please note - this applies to Year Two 2024  that will be regrouped for 2025.

All other grades (Kinder,  Year One, Year Two, Year Four, Year Five and Year Six will be single stream for 2025).

Optimising the learning environment is the prime focus when forming new class groups for 2025, not forming friendship groups.  The aim is to provide classes in which each child is able to continue to develop to their full potential.

If there is a particular issue regarding your child’s optimum learning for 2025, please write to Mrs Webb, via email, stating your concerns and requests.  You are invited to be proactive rather than reactive.

Please note that this is not an opportunity to request individual teachers, but an opportunity to state a particular issue that might impact on your child’s learning in 2025.

All requests will be considered but NOT NECESSARILY GUARANTEED.

Please send your email requests to info@olhcdow.catholic.edu.au , using Class Placement 2025 as the subject line, marked to the attention of Mrs Webb by Friday 22nd November 2024.  Further requests regarding class placement will not take place after this date.

Please note that because we are committed to the belief that each child begins each school year anew, we do not retain information regarding these requests from previous years.

This is the time to raise any issues regarding your child’s optimum learning for 2025.  After all requests have been considered the school will make the final decision regarding all placements.

      Important Dates for Term 4

We thank the teachers for the planning and preparation that goes into the organisation of these events. We look forward to sharing photos with you via our Facebook page over the coming weeks.

As we commence this final term we ask God to bless us all and each of our families and ask for God’s continued blessing.

May we continue to Seek Wisdom and Love God in all that we do.

Congratulations to Ingham who were the House Point winners last term. Please see below for the overall house point tally for Term 3.

      1st - Ingham (1818 points)

      2nd - Sarkis (1744 points)

      3rd - MacKillop (1405 points)

      4th - Rose (1393 points)

This term we continue our PB4L focus, Afternoon Dismissal. The students have been reminded of these expectations, procedures and how to follow the school rules when they are dismissed in the afternoon.

We appreciate your support in ensuring that your child uses one of the dismissal points each afternoon (Pick Up, John Therry, Bus, After School Care or Classroom Pick up). Please remember that if you plan to come into the school to pick up your child you must enter the school via the St Anne gate and not through the school car park gate.

At 2.45pm all children leave their classrooms. Those who travel on buses, use the car pick up area or wait for their John Therry siblings, are to move to these pick up areas under the supervision of classroom teachers. Parents may move from the seats near the flagpole, or from the parent waiting area at the hall, to their child’s classroom. Parents cannot wait for children outside the classrooms or library as it is distracting for the children. Teachers will remain near their classroom after the bell and then escort the remaining children to the office area to be supervised until they are collected by parents.

To help ensure safety, the car park is not to be accessed from 2.45pm until 3.05pm. Parents and children are asked to use the Demetrius Road pedestrian gate. We also ask that parents don’t park in the school car park and walk over to pick up their child from the Pick Up or John Therry waiting area. As a staff we have discussed the duty of care of the students during this time and due to a few concerns in relation to this, these expectations will need to be followed moving forward. Thank you all for your support with following these procedures.

      Tell_them_from_me.png

As mentioned in the last newsletter, our school community (staff, parents and Years 4-6) were asked to give feedback to the school through responding to the Tell Them From Me Survey.

Today’s feedback reflects the ‘teacher voice’ of the school. Overwhelmingly, the parents responded positively  (above 80%) to the following statements:

      Leadership

      • I work with school leaders to create a safe and orderly school environment.
      • School leaders have supported me during stressful times.

      Collaboration

      • I talk with other teachers about strategies that increase student engagement.
      • I discuss learning problems of particular students with other teachers.

      Learning Culture

      • I monitor the progress of individual students.
      • I set high expectations for student learning.

      Data Informs Teaching

      • My assessments help me understand where students are having difficulty.
      • I use formal assessment tasks to help students set challenging goals.
      • I regularly use data from formal assessment tasks to decide whether a concept should be taught another way.
      • When students' formal assessment tasks or daily classroom tasks fail to meet expectations I give them an opportunity to improve.
      • I use results from formal assessment tasks to inform my lesson planning.

      Teaching Strategies

      • My students are very clear about what they are expected to learn.
      • Students receive feedback on their work that brings them closer to achieving their goals.
      • I discuss with students ways of seeking help that will increase learning.

      Inclusive School

      • I am regularly available to help students with special learning needs.
      • I strive to understand the learning needs of students with special learning needs.
      • I establish clear expectations for classroom behaviour.
      • I make sure that students with special learning needs receive meaningful feedback on their work.
      • I make an effort to include students with special learning needs in class activities.
      • I use individual education plans to set goals for students with special learning needs.
      • I create opportunities for success for students who are learning at a slower pace.

KINDERGARTEN 2025 PLAYGROUP - WELCOME TO OLHC!

It has been wonderful to welcome the newest members of the OLHC school community - our Kinder 2025 students, who are having such a great introduction to school life at the playgroup sessions. These sessions are helpful in assisting the Kinder 2025 students to get to know some of their peers that they will be commencing “big” school with next year.

It has also been a great chance for parents to meet and get to know each other in an informal way prior to their child commencing school. Welcome to OLHC Kinder 2025 - we look forward to a positive journey together!

Playgroup will be held next week on Friday 18th October, Thursday 24th October and Friday 25th October. We look forward to welcoming you then.

CHRISTMAS STORY ART OPENING AND EXHIBITION - WOLLONGONG ART GALLERY

It is with great excitement that Ezrah Latulipe,  Year 5 has had his Christmas Story Artwork selected to be part of the annual exhibition at the Wollongong Art Gallery. Ezrah’s art work was one of the top 48 that were chosen from the artworks entered into the competition to be a part of this Exhibition.  Those chosen were works that were judged to best respond to the criteria and were exemplary of Stage 3 reflective writing and artistic skills.

Ezrah attended the Opening Night of the exhibition last night. At the event, Ezrah was able to see his artwork displayed in The Wollongong Art Gallery. What a wonderful achievement!

        National Parent Survey

The CSPA 2024 Parent Survey on Student Wellbeing and Learning is seeking your
perspective as parents/carers of children who attend a Catholic School in Australia.
You are invited to share your views on existing and emerging affirmations and/or
challenges in relation to your child/children’s wellbeing and learning. Please consider
completing this anonymous, confidential, and completely voluntary online survey.
More information about the study, how to participate, and how to have questions
        answered, can be found here.

        Thank you for your interest.

        Opal cards

It is a condition of the use of a School Opal card that students must tap on at the beginning of a trip and tap off at the end of a trip at an Opal Card Reader, when they travel to and from school. Please refer to the Transport for NSW website for further details: https://transportnsw.info/school-pass-terms

Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students fail to tap on and tap off, services for your school may be reduced or even cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage.
