FROM THE GOSPEL
WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?
Jesus once asked, “Who do you say that I am?” We can return the question and ask, “Who do you say you are?” In the Gospels, Jesus identified himself as Son of God, Messiah, and Saviour. The Gospels are not word for word reports but present Jesus with the understanding and language that developed decades later. This theology flowed from Jesus’ words and actions that showed his unique relationship with God and His mission.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week, the staff of Our Lady Help of Christians gathered to consider the mission of the school and the important role that Catholic educators play in bringing about this mission. As a staff, we get this important opportunity to gather, reflect, pray and retreat once a year. This is to further develop our own spiritual growth and formation, which forms an important aspect of our work.
As with any organisation, it is important to consider what the mission of a Catholic school is and how we each contribute to the realisation of this mission. OLHC was established in 1989 and the mission statement was formed soon after this.
As you can appreciate, with staff changes it is of high importance to ensure that all staff understand the purpose (mission) of OLHC. As a Catholic school community, the mission of the school is closely aligned with the Christian values that promote justice, compassion and love.
Thank you for making the necessary care arrangements for your child/rens last Friday, so that the staff could engage in this professional learning opportunity.
The above quote, by Henry Ford, pays tribute to the success experienced through collaboration, teamwork and working together. This type of teamwork happens here at OLHC daily, through the mutual trust and respect that parents and staff members have for each other through a mutual purpose - the student/child.
Our school community is indeed blessed, through this supportive environment that enables students to develop and grow in their faith and learning. It has indeed been so positive, over the past term, to welcome parents and grandparents into our school community, to share positive experiences that demonstrate working together.
At the enrolment of your child, parents are encouraged to work in close partnership with the school, to support the development of your child and work together to experience this success. As a school community, we continually strive to find ways to involve and engage with parents to support the learning that takes place at OLHC.
Through this commitment and partnership, children learn valuable life lessons in relation to working together, partnership, mutual trust and working towards a common goal. For me personally, this has been highlighted from school events over the past ten weeks:
- St Mary of the Cross Mackillop Walkathon
This whole school event enabled students, staff and parents to come together and participate in a walk around our local area. This also enabled the generosity of sponsorship to contribute towards the completion of our school religious icons. Thank you for your generous donations.
- Father’s Day Stall
Thanks to the dedicated teamwork of members of the P&F, students were able to purchase a variety of special gifts to acknowledge, thank and celebrate the special male role models in their lives. This teamwork enabled the students to show gratitude to these significant men in their lives. Thank you for your support of this initiative.
- Book Week Celebrations
What a wonderful day we had! Students were able to learn more about the books that were nominated by the Children's Book Council (CBC). The students also bought in their favourite book and a prop that went with the book.
- Be Skilled Be Fit Olympic Incursion
This was a day to remember! The students were able to share in the Olympic Spirit and represented a range of countries. Thank you to Mrs Cotterill and Miss Northey who were able to plan and organise such a fun day. It was wonderful for the students to experience a range of tabloid sports. We even had a visit from an aspiring Olympian! - Jasmine Locke
- Bunnings Community BBQ - Campbeltown
This was a wonderful community event! Thank you to members of the P&F executive and many parent volunteers who assisted on the day. The day was able to raise money to support our students at OLHC.
I would also like to acknowledge many other events that have taken place this term including:
- CDF Public Speaking Competition at Holy Family Ingleburn
- Christmas Art Story Competition (Stage Three)
- Launch of Word Mission Month at St Michael’s Thirroul
Participation in a variety of Sport Gala Days (Netball, Soccer and Basketball
What a wonderful term!
Thank you to the supportive staff that have enabled each of the above activities to be planned with attention to detail. Thank you also to the office administration staff who support with phone calls, bookings and administrative tasks associated with organising these events. We are indeed grateful for these learning opportunities for our students and the way that they have engaged in all the learning experiences that have been provided this term.
As we take a moment to look back on all that has been over this third term, we do so in a spirit of gratitude, giving thanks to God for all that has been. We indeed have so much to be grateful for. May the coming school holiday break provide the opportunity for you to spend some time with your children and enjoy a break from the normal routine.
As this is my final newsletter for the term, I will be accessing a period of Long Service Leave from Friday 20th September - Friday 27th September. In my absence, Mrs Alison Fazio, will be the Acting Principal and will be well supported by members of the school leadership team. Please direct any queries to a member of the team in my absence.
Wishing you many blessings for the coming weeks and a restful school holiday break.

1st - Ingham (1700 points)
2nd - Sarkis (1584 points)
3rd - Rose (1283 points)
4th - MacKillop (1268 points)
Over the coming weeks one of our PB4L focuses will be Afternoon Dismissal. The students will be reminded of the expectations, procedures and how to follow the school rules when they are dismissed in the afternoon.
We appreciate your support in ensuring that your child uses one of the dismissal points each afternoon (Pick Up, John Therry, Bus, After School Care or Classroom Pick up). Please remember that if you plan to come into the school to pick up your child you must enter the school via the St Anne gate and not through the school car park gate.
At 2.45pm all children leave their classrooms. Those who travel on buses, use the car pick up area or wait for their John Therry siblings, are to move to these pick up areas under the supervision of classroom teachers. Parents may move from the seats near the flagpole, or from the parent waiting area at the hall, to their child’s classroom. Parents cannot wait for children outside the classrooms or library as it is distracting for the children. Teachers will remain near their classroom after the bell and then escort the remaining children to the office area to be supervised until they are collected by parents.
To help ensure safety, the car park is not to be accessed from 2.45pm until 3.05pm. Parents and children are asked to use the Demetrius Road pedestrian gate. We also ask that parents don’t park in the school car park and walk over to pick up their child from the Pick Up or John Therry waiting area. As a staff we have discussed the duty of care of the students during this time and due to a few concerns in relation to this, these expectations will need to be followed moving forward.
Members of the Leadership Team will be reminding parents of this next week so we are ready to start with this at the beginning of next term.

Reminder: CANTEEN CLOSED Friday 27 September 2024
The canteen will be closed on Friday 27 September 2024. Please ensure students have adequate lunch, recess and drinks for the day.
As previously mentioned, at the start of Term 4, the school will have a new company operating the canteen, called 'Cantina Catering'. The new company will provide the options for parents to order lunches online via the Flexischools App.
This is exciting news, as it will give parents and staff the flexibility to order lunches online in advance via Flexischools App.
Our next newsletter of how to access Flexischools.
Parent will still be able to do manual lunch orders.
Please find new canteen menu below that will commence Term 4 2024.
WORLD MISSION MONTH - OCTOBER
Last week, Olivia Anderson and Vinhy Tran attended a special liturgy with Bishop Brian to launch Mission Month. We learned about how we can continue supporting communities in Mongolia, during Mission Month to support those in rural communities. We share in God’s mission to reach out, give life by sharing our personal and financial resources to: - proclaim the Gospel, - serve people in need, - act for peace, justice, and creation; In partnership with local churches, so that all may have life in Christ. More information will be shared next term in relation to fundraising initiatives to support World Mission Month. The theme this year is Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet.

Gifted and Talented Students
Thirteen eager students from Years Four, Five, and Six have been actively involved in our Bridges Program at John Therry Catholic College. Under the guidance of Miss Northey, Mrs Wheeler and Year 10 mentors, they were challenged to design and build a bridge that was at least 50cm long, able to hold 500g of weight for 30 seconds without breaking, and withstand wind or turbulence for a full minute without moving or collapsing. The bridges also had to be made from recyclable materials or a simple wooden structure, and look visually appealing.
We’re thrilled to announce that all of the bridges successfully passed the tests! We look forward to showcasing these impressive creations at an assembly early next term.
A huge congratulations to our OLHC students for their enthusiasm, dedication, and achievement, and thank you to Mrs Wheeler and the Year 10 mentors for their support and guidance throughout the process.
We are excited to continue our gifted and talented partnership with John Therry Catholic College into 2025!
