IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY - DIOCESAN FEAST DAY
Last weekend, the Diocese of Wollongong celebrated the Patronal Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We honour Mary in her whole-hearted devotion to God and the Son entrusted to her maternal love. We imitate her as the one above all who pondered in her heart the life and mystery of Christ. More than this, in her standing by Jesus at the Cross, Mary inspires us to live the most tender attitudes of the Christian heart - mercy and compassion for those who suffer and need our kindness and attentive support. In her love for Jesus, Joseph, Elizabeth, the Apostles and early Church as they gathered in prayer, Mary is the pattern for knowing the importance of the person before us.
Mary teaches us to treasure the importance of women in our families, friendships, workplace, and church communities, especially in their capacity for love of others, nurturing and protecting children, and enjoying personal relationships of mutual affection, trust, and care. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us, that we will contemplate the mystery of Jesus’ love for us and give that love to those in need of our welcome
May we look to the example of Mary, who was the spiritual Mother of Jesus for her example. May we respond to the needs of others in the same way that Mary responded to be the mother of Jesus.
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we move towards the end of Semester One, our teachers have been writing reports that indicate the progress and achievement throughout the semester. Below is an explanation of the reporting system that will be used this year. It is important that parents know we report on student progress over the semester (Terms One and Two).
These reports are not a report of growth from one year to the next or one semester to the next. Therefore, you may see your child not receive the same performance descriptor as last year’s report. This is because they have studied different work aimed to meet different syllabus outcomes.
Semester One reports will be available on Compass for parents from Wednesday 26th June for students in Kinder to Year 6. Reports are written in line with the requirements of the K-10 syllabuses for the Australian Curriculum in English and Mathematics are awarded to students following the Common Grade Scale. At the Parent Teacher Interviews in week 10, your child’s class teacher will be able to explain how the performance descriptor awarded reflects the level of work your child is currently achieving.
Performance Descriptors -
Extensive |
The student has extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations. |
Thorough |
The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student can apply this knowledge and these skills in most situations. |
Sound |
The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills. |
Basic |
The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills. |
Elementary |
The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills. |
Effort Descriptors:
This section of the report captures the student’s attitude to the particular KLA and their skills in managing their work, persisting when challenged and working to their potential. A scale explaining the three standards used to describe student effort is included on the front of the report.
Strands:
The term ‘strands’ refers to the breakdown of learning within each Key Learning Area (KLA) that is presented in a grid with the options Extensive, Thorough, Sound, Limited and Basic for teachers to indicate the performance of the student within each strand. Over a reporting period some strands will have a greater focus than others, which will impact the overall performance description for the KLA. In some KLAs not every strand will be covered each reporting period; those that are not covered will not appear on the report.
New look
As mentioned in the last newsletter, the following changes will be evident in your child’s semester report from Semester One 2024:
- A ‘new look’ report format released via Compass reflecting the outcomes of the new K-10 English and Mathematics syllabuses providing a descriptor for each of the focus areas found in the respective syllabuses.
- There will be no general comment in Semester 1 reports. This was a diocesan decision and is consistent across all CEDoW schools.
- All Kindergarten students will now receive a written report in Semester 1 and Semester 2 with a three-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors: -
- Thorough
- Sound
- Basic
- Students in Year 1 - Year 6 will continue to receive semester reports twice a year with a five-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors: -
- Extensive
- Thorough
- Sound
- Basic
- Elementary
